‘The Panama Bowler’

In 2024, I was invited to take part in a global collaboration by Ecua-Andino Hats, a leading Ecuadorian producer and exporter of Panama hats. The campaign aimed to support creative voices in headwear fashion and redefine the traditional Panama hat.

Supplied with beautifully woven hat bodies, I was inspired to merge this iconic material with a symbol of British heritage. The result: the Panama Bowler.

This design fuses the classic structure of the British bowler hat with the lightweight elegance of the Panama, creating a playful yet refined piece that bridges cultures and traditions. A celebration of craftsmanship and identity, the Panama Bowler reimagines a timeless shape through a fresh, cross-cultural lens.

The Panama Bowler embodies heritage by uniting two iconic symbols of national identity: the Ecuadorian Panama hat and the British bowler. Each represents a deep-rooted cultural tradition—the Panama, known for its handwoven craftsmanship using toquilla straw, and the bowler, a longstanding emblem of British fashion and formality. By blending these two forms, the design pays homage to the heritage of both countries while creating something entirely new. It’s a celebration of global craftsmanship, history, and the evolution of style through cultural dialogue.

Millinery Heritage

After attending a number of weddings in one year, I became fascinated by the creativity and elegance of hats. I enrolled in a one-day millinery course with the brilliant Judy Bentinck—and less than ten minutes in, I knew I’d found my calling.

Following that, I went on to train with Rose Cory, milliner to the late Queen Mother. I was captivated by her stories and the traditional techniques she shared—skills passed down through generations of British hat makers.

The heritage of hat making is incredibly important to me. It’s more than fashion; it’s a craft rooted in history, identity, and artistry. Each hat carries echoes of the past while offering space for modern expression. Being part of this lineage is both a privilege and an inspiration.

My connection to the textile world runs deep. My Mother’s Mother made her own clothes and worked for a Jewish company during the war, placing lambswool into the linings of RAF pilots’ jackets. It was meticulous, meaningful work—supporting those on the front lines with warmth and care. My Father’s Mother was an avid knitter who taught me as a child.

Though very different in context, millinery carries a similar sense of purpose and craftsmanship. That generational link—of women working with their hands, shaping fabric with intention—has always resonated with me. I see it as part of a quiet but powerful legacy.
