‘Flight Of The Milliner’
Flight of the Milliner is a striking large sloped saucer hat in muted jade green sinamay. It is adorned with individually placed bird wings, ethically sourced from a taxidermist who works closely with an aviary in the Midlands. The bird wings are positioned along the brim to evoke the illusion of flight, with a mix of pastel tones and vibrant pops. The design pays homage to milliner Sally Victor, known for her innovative, architectural approach to hat design. This piece blends natural beauty with avant-garde fashion, creating a sculptural, thought-provoking statement. It is an exploration of nature, art, and the enduring spirit of modern millinery.

“Flight of the Milliner connects deeply with the heritage of millinery by revisiting the historical practice of incorporating taxidermy into fashion, a technique that was particularly popular in Victorian times. However, the practice faded as concerns grew over the unethical sourcing of animals and the role it played in pushing species toward extinction. While this dark history cannot be ignored, my work carefully reintroduces taxidermy in a modern, ethical context, ensuring all bird wings are sourced responsibly from a trusted taxidermist who works with aviaries to guarantee sustainable practices, making sure the birds died naturally. This piece blends traditional millinery skills with this contemporary approach, combining blocked sinamay with the delicate beauty of ethically sourced taxidermy. It is a fusion of history and modernity, reflecting how millinery can evolve while honoring its past and the importance of ethical craftsmanship.”
Materials and Techniques
The hat is made from blocked sinamay, a traditional millinery material known for its lightness and flexibility when blocking. The muted jade colour of the sinamay serves as the perfect base for the delicately positioned bird wings. These wings are ethically sourced from a taxidermist in the Midlands, who specializes in preserving and preparing animal specimens with respect for nature. The bird wings are carefully wired and arranged to create a sense of movement and life, balancing natural elements with structured millinery techniques. The hat is hand-finished in Sahar Millinery's London studio, ensuring attention to detail and exceptional craftsmanship.
Millinery Heritage
“I began my creative journey under the name UglyLovely, experimenting with sustainable materials, found objects, and celebrating imperfections. As I honed my skills in costume design, I transitioned into millinery, drawn by the artistry and craftsmanship involved in hat-making. I studied Costume Design at Edinburgh College of Art and further developed my skills through a year of work experience with milliners in Scotland. Over the past 18 years, I’ve slowly built my collections and client base. Through my studio, Sahar Millinery, I now create bespoke and showpiece hats, blending traditional techniques with experimental, sustainable materials.
The heritage of hat-making is deeply significant to me, connecting to centuries of craftsmanship that shaped fashion and identity. By preserving and reinterpreting these traditions, I merge the old with the new to create pieces that reflect my cultural roots and creative vision. Millinery is an ever-evolving art form, with endless possibilities for innovation.
I’m half Persian, and textiles have always been part of my cultural heritage, deeply ingrained in my upbringing. Persian textiles are renowned for their intricate patterns and craftsmanship, and this influence has shaped my approach to materials and textures in millinery. On the British side, I don’t have direct ties to hat-making, but my love for the craft grew over time as I recognized the artistry involved. I have always felt connected to the legacy of British craftsmanship, which complements my own passion for pushing the boundaries of tradition.”
