‘Zinnia Moon’
Zinnia Moon was part of the I Feel Space AW24 collection in collaboration with Swarovski crystals. The collection was inspired by the aurora borealis, transcending the ordinary, beckoning you into a universe of celestial entrancement, a reminder to stop, look up and dream. The Zinnia Moon piece came from a picture of a diamond, ruby and sapphire collar necklace, which I thought would make a beautiful clustered flower crown, as worn by an ethereal princess, heading to a cosmic ball. Made from artificial flowers, individually hand-painted, with Swarovski crystals in the centre, this piece took many hours to complete, with lots of trial and error.
Not for sale.
“This piece, as with any hand-made hat or headpiece, embodies the essence of heritage – leaning on artisan craft and skills, and exploring new contemporary materials to create a dazzling crown that embodies status, wealth and transformation.”
Materials and Techniques
I wanted the piece to be light and easy to wear, but have a metallic feel, resonant of precious jewels, fitting for a princess. We explored different materials for the flowers and decided on artificial blossom, which we double dipped in resin and then experimented with varying techniques of paint – nail varnish, car paint, and finally, chromium, applying several coats. We then added Swarovski crystals in the centre to give the feel of sparkling stars.
Millinery Heritage
“I’ve always loved hats. My first hat party was at the age of seven, and, when dressing up, no outfit was complete without a hat. My mother was a dressmaker and an upholsterer, and sewing and creating outfits was normal at home. After school, I did an apprenticeship with Edwina Ibbotsen, who taught me the craft, about materials, an appreciation of detail and precision, and an understanding of millinery as storytelling and art. I then went on to Kensington College to further my millinery studies and find my own voice and style.
My mother was an upholsterer and dress maker, so it was something I grew up surrounded by. ”
