Materials and Techniques

The hat was shaped from a hat block made by Shirley Hex

This hat was from a hat called ‘Hollywood Regency’, and it was inspired by mid-century Palm Springs and Shirley Hex in previous years had given me a spatre block, which was exactly a perfect early 1960’s hat block, so I combined the two ideas and it was, Shirley in palm Springs.
Shirley Hex passed on this hat block to me, which she valued and thought I would like.
The hat is made from straw and it’s in yellow and white, which is completely the palette of fun resorts in the early 1960’s. When Shirley made this hat, it was a hat block she made for herself, she had a plait coming out the top of the hat, so I mimicked this.
