Rizvi Millinery
‘Oxford’s Bowler’
The piece was created 20 years ago for The merchant of Mills Scotland who provided Scottish wool from their Mills wanting new designs created for their wool. I created a Bowler hat that had the Markings / patterns of a Tradition Oxford shoe on the crown with subtle play of the weave of the wool. With a machine stitch Union flag lining for extra British eccentricity.
Not for sale.
“‘Oxford’s Bowler’ plays with the traditional concept of the Bowler hat worn by working class men mixed with the iconic Oxford shoe, all hand blocked in traditional millinery skills”
Materials and Techniques
100% wool with buckrum and millinery wire. All hand blocked in traditional millinery techniques
Millinery Heritage
“I think the transformation of a flat object or sketch and turning it into a 3 dimensional hat/ sculptural piece is a remarkable feat. To use traditional skills as a foundation gives a unique platform to push the boundaries with modern materials to push millinery into more diverse and up to date genres. Without having these preliminary skills I wouldn’t have been able to move the way hats are worn in the theater. Which makes a big difference to the performer on stage. ”
