“This hat reminds me of the oversized boaters that were often worn by Edwardian women particularly when riding a bicycle. The beginnings of emancipation!”
Materials and Techniques
This hat was made with Pinok Pok, a high quality sinamay with a tight weave and a beautiful finish. Ideal for constructing a large brimmed hat. The satin hand dyed fabric flowers are bonded to organza and shaped with simple flower tools. Sparkling Swarovski crystals are twisted onto fine wire to create the stamens. Topped with iridescent peacock sword feathers.
Millinery Heritage
“I come from a family of artisans, for example, an enameller, model maker, a Master carpenter, a maker of stained glass and my great Aunt, who was a milliner’s flower maker, so a definite connection with hats!
My mother taught me to sew, knit and crochet as her mother had taught her. It ensured I had the creative bug early on, making dolls clothes and then clothes for me.
It was much later in life that I started classes with Rose Cory, the Queen Mother’s milliner. On my first day I fell in love with millinery and continue to have that passion.”
